Watershed Management Plan
The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is committed to protecting, managing and improving the water resources and habitat within our watershed boundaries. We proactively seek out future opportunities for stormwater treatment across the watershed that fits with the desired land use of the redevelopment occurring. These efforts result in designs that serve multiple purposes and maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of our work to reduce flooding, improve water quality and habitat.
Our watershed management plan sets out goals, strategies and implementation actions based on past studies and current data on the watershed.
The MWMO’s watershed management plan is used in several ways:
- MWMO staff and commissioners use the plan to guide watershed management decisions and to assist in the development of annual staff work plans.
- Member organizations (i.e. local governments) use the plan to develop local surface water management plans, and to assist in scheduling and coordinating capital improvements and programs.
- Residents, businesses and other organizations within the watershed can use the plan to learn more about water and habitat within the watershed, and to be aware of the projects, activity areas and operations of the MWMO.

Watershed Management Plan Update
The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is currently in the process of updating its Watershed Management Plan as required by state law. During this process, the MWMO will seek input from various stakeholders — including the public, state agencies and local governments — about local stormwater-related issues, water management goals, regulations and programs. This plan update, which will be completed by May 2021, will be the fourth official Watershed Management Plan published and/or adopted by the MWMO since the organization was formed in 1985.
