The LEED-certified project also received a boost with the award of a $550,000 grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, whose focus is on reducing the amount of polluted runoff water reaching the river.

R.L. Stevenson Elementary School was recently awarded the Outdoor Learning on the Riverfront grant through the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization. The $3,000 grant will allow the school to expand outdoor learning opportunities by creating a rain garden and butterfly garden in the center of the newly created turnaround area near the playground.

One organization in Minnesota is keeping a close eye on the northern part of the Mississippi River through an extensive water quality monitoring effort that includes the river, a stormwater drainage system, and local lakes and wetlands.

In the state of 10,000 lakes, it's important to have clean water. Right now the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is partnering with the University of Minnesota to try and figure out where pollutants are coming from now.
