SUMMARY:Salts and Sweets
DESCRIPTION:Salt keeps sidewalks safe in winter\, but it doesn’t stop at the curb. Once the snow melts\, that salt moves into our rivers and lakes\, where it can quietly cause real harm. Salts & Sweets is a low-pressure\, drop-in event where you can learn how winter salt affects water quality and what actually works to reduce excess salt without sacrificing safety. \nStop by to explore MWMO’s smart salting exhibit\, ask curious questions\, and pick up practical tips you can use right away. There will be conversations with staff\, simple take-home ideas\, and a few limited Salt Smart mugs and traction grit available while supplies last. Come for a few minutes or stay awhile—either way\, you’ll leave knowing more than you did when you arrived (and maybe a little less salty). \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Still Moving Exhibit Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of Still Moving and meet artist Tracy Walsh while you explore her photographs and enjoy light refreshments. \nStill Moving is a photography-based exhibition that explores the relationship between mental health\, water\, and seasonal cycles through imagery rooted in the natural world. Drawing parallels between the movement of the Mississippi River and the inner landscapes of the human mind\, the project invites viewers to slow down\, reflect\, and recognize that stillness is not an absence of motion but an active and necessary state of rest. \nThe exhibition unfolds in four sections — Pause\, Within\, Confluence\, and Return — inviting visitors to move through the work in a way that echoes the flow of a river and the rhythm of seasonal change. Through frozen botanicals\, macro studies\, double exposures\, and layered interior and exterior compositions\, the photographs reflect both watershed processes and lived emotional experience\, especially during winter months in northern climates. \nBy encouraging reflection\, creative engagement\, and sensory awareness\, Still Moving offers a gentle way to navigate the winter blues and reconnect with the quiet resilience present in both our rivers and ourselves. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Still Moving Sound Bath Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided sound bath experience that invites you to connect with the mind and the river\, beginning with a pause that invites stillness and listening. The human body is made of nearly 60% water\, mirroring the river’s own flowing nature. In this session\, you’ll be guided into stillness\, turning your attention inward to notice subtle movement\, breath\, and rhythm. \nThe river’s flow creates sound as water meets rock. The crystal singing bowls\, formed from earth\, stone\, and crystal\, carry these same elemental origins. As their tones fill the space\, gentle vibrations move through the body\, bringing inner and outer waters into into confluence\, resonating through the body. In this shared sound and stillness\, we return to a natural rhythm\, remembering a sense of presence that has always been there. \nThis immersive workshop offers a moment of rest\, reflection\, and sensory connection that encourages you to slow down\, listen deeply\, and reconnect with both yourself and the river. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Mississippi Musings March Workshop: Impact of Warming Winters
DESCRIPTION:This workshop kicks off Mississippi Musings\, a new MWMO workshop series exploring the Mississippi River through science\, storytelling\, and art. Inspired by Sacred Water\, Shared Future\, this year-long series invites community members to connect more deeply with the river and its future. \nDid you know that Minnesota’s winters are warming faster than our summer months?  Come learn about the impacts of warming winters on the Mississippi River and surrounding watershed. \nAt this opening session\, Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative\, will be both expert and storyteller at this month’s workshop.  Jothsna Harris implements climate change programs that are rooted in community and centered on personal stories. \nArtist Kimberly Boustead will lead participants through a collaborative art project consisting of personalized squares depicting a healthy Mississippi River.  Participants will learn simple stitches and applique to adorn their squares with botanical dyed stitching and wool elements. \nThis workshop is a collaborative effort between the MWMO; Minneapolis artist\, Kimberly Boustead; and Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Share the River Nordeast
DESCRIPTION:After a couple years hiatus\, Share the River Nordeast is back! \nJoin us on Saturday\, June 27 from 9 a.m. to noon for a free\, low-stakes way to experience the Mississippi River. No paddling experience\, gear\, or prior knowledge required. Just show up\, hop in a canoe\, and let experienced guides take care of the rest. Canoe rides will be led by guides from Wilderness Inquiry\, with support from National Park Service rangers from the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and Mississippi Park Connection staff. \nThis event is an easy introduction to the river. You don’t need to be outdoorsy. You don’t need to know how to paddle. You don’t even need to commit to staying the whole time; just drop in anytime during the event window\, take a guided ride\, and see the river from a perspective most people never do. \nAnd while you’re here\, you’ll also get to explore the MWMO Stormwater Park and Learning Center.\, where we’ll have light refreshments and hands-on activities that connect what you just experienced on the water to the bigger picture: how this river works\, why it matters\, and what’s being done to protect it. \nThis is a family-friendly event for all ages (as long as participants weigh at least 30 lbs. to fit provided life jackets)\, and a great way to learn about the river’s ecology\, water quality\, and the plants and animals that call it home\, without it ever feeling like a lecture.
