SUMMARY:Net-Making Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Come explore net-making as both fiber art and performance practice. Learn the methods and materials used in commercial and recreational fishing along the Gulf Coast\, and explore ways to expand on the counting\, handwork\, postures\, rhythms\, and gestures of tying knots and weaving that go into this disappearing practice. \nUsing tools from her performance practice\, artist Victoria Bradford Styrbicki will lead participants through improvisation and iteration\, learning basic tasks like loading the net needle and tying the cinch knot to experimenting with mesh sizes and dip techniques. The workshop will be a laboratory\, or a site that together we should approach with a spirit of experimentation\, with a spirit of trial and error\, even of play\, and\, insistently\, of humor—that is\, the ability to laugh at ourselves and find joy in what we come upon even as we begin to take ourselves too seriously. \nParticipants will go away with the net they create during the workshop as well as a spool of twine and a net needle for future experimentation and practice. \nRegistration is required. Register here. \nLearn More: Network: A River Connected

SUMMARY:Art and Science on the River: Salt
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the impacts of salt on the Mississippi River and the surrounding watershed. Did you know that one teaspoon of salt permanently pollutes five gallons of water and salt makes freshwater uninhabitable for many aquatic species? \nArtists Kimberly Boustead and Annie Hejny will lead an art-making activity centered around the interaction of salt and water. MWMO staff member Abby Moore will share information about salt pollution in the river and best practices to prevent it. \nParticipants can take home some interesting salt art as well as tips to share with friends and neighbors for reducing salt use and protecting the river. \nRegistration required. \nRegister\nLearn More\n\nArt and Science on the River Workshop Series

SUMMARY:LTER Ramble on Salt
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever stopped to think about salt? Like\, really think about it? Sure\, it makes french fries delicious\, but did you know it’s also sneaking into our freshwater lakes and rivers\, changing ecosystems in ways that are kind of a big deal? \nThat’s why MSP_LTER (Minneapolis-St. Paul Long-Term Ecological Research Program) is hosting the Ramble on Salt—a casual\, nerdy\, hands-on gathering where scientists\, artists\, and local community members come together to talk about how salt is affecting urban watersheds in the Twin Cities. \nAt this event\, you’ll have the opportunity to: \n\nCreate letterpress postcards inspired by environmental themes\nEngage with interactive maps that highlight salt’s impact on local waterways\nSpeak with freshwater ecologists\, watershed managers\, and salt practitioners\n\nWhether you’re a scientist\, artist\, policymaker\, or simply curious about the health of our urban waters\, we welcome you to join the conversation. Together\, we can explore ways to balance winter safety with sustainable water management.

SUMMARY:Kasota Ponds Community Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers pick up trash during the Kasota Ponds Clean Up. \n📅 Saturday\, April 12 | 10 a.m.–2 p.m.\n☔ Rain Date: Sunday\, April 27 \nCome help out at one of the smallest (and most beloved) wetland habitats in the Twin Cities. The Kasota Ponds in St. Paul are tucked in the industrial corridor of St. Anthony Park\, and while they may be small\, they’re mighty important. \nThese ponds are the only wetlands in the MWMO watershed\, and they face ongoing threats from road runoff and illegal dumping. Volunteers are needed to help clear debris and restore habitat health. Staff from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization will be on hand to answer your questions about water quality\, wildlife\, and how wetlands keep our cities resilient. \nHosted by the St. Anthony Park Community Council\, this cleanup is a great way to get outside\, meet your neighbors\, and make a visible difference in a single afternoon. Gloves and bags provided.

SUMMARY:Salts and Sweets
DESCRIPTION:Salt keeps sidewalks safe in winter\, but it doesn’t stop at the curb. Once the snow melts\, that salt moves into our rivers and lakes\, where it can quietly cause real harm. Salts & Sweets is a low-pressure\, drop-in event where you can learn how winter salt affects water quality and what actually works to reduce excess salt without sacrificing safety. \nStop by to explore MWMO’s smart salting exhibit\, ask curious questions\, and pick up practical tips you can use right away. There will be conversations with staff\, simple take-home ideas\, and a few limited Salt Smart mugs and traction grit available while supplies last. Come for a few minutes or stay awhile—either way\, you’ll leave knowing more than you did when you arrived (and maybe a little less salty). \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Still Moving Exhibit Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of Still Moving and meet artist Tracy Walsh while you explore her photographs and enjoy light refreshments. \nStill Moving is a photography-based exhibition that explores the relationship between mental health\, water\, and seasonal cycles through imagery rooted in the natural world. Drawing parallels between the movement of the Mississippi River and the inner landscapes of the human mind\, the project invites viewers to slow down\, reflect\, and recognize that stillness is not an absence of motion but an active and necessary state of rest. \nThe exhibition unfolds in four sections — Pause\, Within\, Confluence\, and Return — inviting visitors to move through the work in a way that echoes the flow of a river and the rhythm of seasonal change. Through frozen botanicals\, macro studies\, double exposures\, and layered interior and exterior compositions\, the photographs reflect both watershed processes and lived emotional experience\, especially during winter months in northern climates. \nBy encouraging reflection\, creative engagement\, and sensory awareness\, Still Moving offers a gentle way to navigate the winter blues and reconnect with the quiet resilience present in both our rivers and ourselves. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Still Moving Sound Bath Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided sound bath experience that invites you to connect with the mind and the river\, beginning with a pause that invites stillness and listening. The human body is made of nearly 60% water\, mirroring the river’s own flowing nature. In this session\, you’ll be guided into stillness\, turning your attention inward to notice subtle movement\, breath\, and rhythm. \nThe river’s flow creates sound as water meets rock. The crystal singing bowls\, formed from earth\, stone\, and crystal\, carry these same elemental origins. As their tones fill the space\, gentle vibrations move through the body\, bringing inner and outer waters into into confluence\, resonating through the body. In this shared sound and stillness\, we return to a natural rhythm\, remembering a sense of presence that has always been there. \nThis immersive workshop offers a moment of rest\, reflection\, and sensory connection that encourages you to slow down\, listen deeply\, and reconnect with both yourself and the river. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.
