SUMMARY:Share the River
DESCRIPTION:After a couple years hiatus\, Share the River is back! \nJoin us on Saturday\, June 27 from 9 a.m. to noon for a free\, low-stakes way to experience the Mississippi River. No paddling experience\, gear\, or prior knowledge required. Just show up\, hop in a canoe\, and let experienced guides take care of the rest. Canoe rides will be led by guides from Wilderness Inquiry\, with support from MWMO staff. \nThis event is an easy introduction to the river. You don’t need to be outdoorsy. You don’t need to know how to paddle. You don’t even need to commit to staying the whole time; just drop in anytime during the event window\, take a guided ride\, and see the river from a perspective most people never do. \nAnd while you’re here\, you’ll also get to explore the MWMO Stormwater Park and Learning Center\, where we’ll have light refreshments and hands-on activities that connect what you just experienced on the water to the bigger picture: how this river works\, why it matters\, and what’s being done to protect it. \nThis is a family-friendly event for all ages (as long as participants weigh at least 30 lbs. to fit provided life jackets)\, and a great way to learn about the river’s ecology\, water quality\, and the plants and animals that call it home\, without it ever feeling like a lecture.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nPart of the exhibition Rooted in Water\, this workshop explores connections between art\, ecology\, and the Mississippi River through the creation of handmade lanterns. \nLanterns are an ancient art form with live traditions still found in China\, Japan\, Korea\, and across the Asian diaspora. In this workshop\, we will create a paper lantern utilizing recycled materials\, adding decorative paper cut to celebrate creatures who live in/near the Mississippi River. \n\n\n\nEach workshop features a different set of river-inspired designs. On July 11\, participants will create lanterns celebrating loons\, fish\, and water lilies. On July 18\, designs will focus on dragonflies\, frogs\, and bats. \n\n\n\nThis class is open to youth ages 8 and older\, as well as adults. Registration is capped at 30 participants. \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mississippi Musings July Workshop: Stormwater Connections
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a journey from your neighborhood to the Mississippi River as we explore the personal side of stormwater science and policy. \nIn this Mississippi Musings workshop\, Mississippi River paddler Devin Brown will share what draws her to the river. Fourteen years ago\, she moved to Minnesota because she was curious about the Mississippi River. She’s still following it\, and the stories\, lessons\, and community she’s found along the way continue to shape her life. \nMWMO Planner-Project Manager Aaron Goemann will then explore the people\, history\, and challenges that shaped Minneapolis’ storm sewer system\, connecting the city’s past to the way stormwater moves through our neighborhoods today. \nThe evening concludes with a hands-on art activity led by artist Kimberly Boustead\, inviting participants to reflect on what a healthy river looks like to them. \nEnjoy light refreshments and take time to explore the Stormwater Park and Learning Center. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Explore your relationship to water\, community\, and change through embodied learning. \n\n\n\n\nDeveloped by interdisciplinary artist and choreographer\, Victoria Bradford Styrbicki\, the workshop draws from her semaphore-inspired choreographic framework\, in which coded gestures communicate messages that cannot always be spoken aloud. \nThe workshop introduces attendees to the idea that water holds memory — of storms\, pollution\, healing\, migration\, and care — and that our own bodies also carry stories shaped by our environments. Using simple movement scores\, flag-based signaling\, and creative improvisation\, participants translate feelings such as grief\, resilience\, fear\, and hope into physical form. \nThe workshop concludes with a facilitated dialogue connecting the movement work to how environmental change mirrors the emotional and social changes in our own lives — and how collective action\, like collective movement\, can shape healthier futures for both water and community. \nChildren ages 10 and up accompanied by an adult are welcome. Space is limited. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.
