SUMMARY:Fibersheds and Watersheds: A Weaving Water Free Indigo and Fiber Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Spin your own yarn as we twist our minds around fibersheds and watersheds\, and figure out how you play a role in these invisible systems. \nWorkshop Details\n\nLearn the basics of spinning\, or yarn-making\, one of the oldest human technologies. The twisting of short fibers to create lengths of usable yarn is a necessary step before making any kind of woven or knit cloth. Imagine where we’d be without cloth!\nMaddy Bartsch of Three Rivers Fibershed will lead us in a spinning circle as she helps us visualize a regional soil-to-soil fiber system. Spin your own length of yarn to dye in the organic indigo vat. See and try different types of spinning tools and sample techniques. This is just an intro to spinning\, but we’ll point you toward more resources if you fall in love with it. No fiber or textile experience needed whatsoever!\nWorkshops are guided by artists and intended to open up channels of communication that help us reconnect to natural systems we depend on. Come with an open mind to learn and share what you know.\nPersonal Watersheds will also be open\, with the SAORI loom available and other fiber activities in addition to spinning.\n\nReserve a Spot\nFeatured Artist\nThree Rivers Fibershed is an affiliate branch of Fibershed\, an international movement which “develops regional fiber systems that build soil and protect the health of our biospheres.” Co-President and Three Rivers Fibershed co-founder Maddy Bartsch (they/she) is a farmer\, educator and organizer who helps folks navigate local textile economies. Maddy speaks and teaches on the topic of local fiber systems and sustainable textiles to learners of all ages throughout the Midwest. \nAbout\nWeaving Water Workshops connect people to our local wonder\, the Mississippi River\, through free community indigo and fiber art workshops. Mississippi Watershed Management Organization’s (MWMO) Artist in Residence Sarah Nassif facilitates hands-on creative experiences that encourage us to see ourselves as vital parts of our urban watershed system. Workshops explore different aspects of fiber and indigo dye techniques and invite participants to converse about their personal relationships to water. \nAccompanying Exhibit Personal Watersheds is installed as an interactive exhibit at MWMO for the community to come together and play with fiber\, natural indigo dye and cloth traditions from many cultures. This exhibit is open to the public during open building hours. See mwmo.org for current hours. \nVolunteer for Weaving Water\nI always need help setting up and cleaning up workshops. If you are interested\, add on “volunteer” to your ticket or email sarah@sarahnassif.com to learn more about opportunities beyond the free fiber workshops. \nLocation\nAll workshops are scheduled to be in person at MWMO (2522 Marshall St NE) unless otherwise noted. Workshops may be held via Zoom and project kits will be mailed out in case it is not possible to gather in person for any reason. \nAttire / COVID Safety / Intergenerational Info / Accessibility\nDress in clothes that may be stained. Masks and aprons welcome. Please stay home if you are experiencing any COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms. Thank you for helping us stay healthy! There may be activities indoors and outdoors depending on weather. \nWe encourage intergenerational learning! We offer a guided “open studio” format. Those under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by an adult\, and adults will need to guide their youngsters as needed in different activities. There are many ways to engage for all ages and abilities. If you need any accessibility accommodations\, please email amoore@mwmo.org.

SUMMARY:Seeing Salt | New Artwork by Annie Irene Hejny
DESCRIPTION:During her training as a Minnesota Water Steward\, which took place during Minnesota’s third-snowiest winter season on record\, Annie Irene Hejny became aware of the immense role that chloride plays in polluting freshwater. When she learned that only 1 teaspoon of road salt permanently pollutes 5 gallons of water\, she began to envision artwork that could call attention to this concern and offer solutions for communities. Once she began to notice excess salt on our sidewalks and roadways\, she couldn’t stop seeing it. In April\, she swept up 4 gallons of residual salt from a parking lot and began working with it in her studio. Integrating the salt with materials such as cement\, indigo and watercolor\, this series is an invitation into conversations about how to pay attention to salt\, reduce our usage\, and protect the future health of our waterways. \nSeeing Salt | New Artwork by Annie Irene Hejny\nFriday\, Nov. 10\, from 5–10 p.m.\, and Saturday\, Nov. 11\, from 12–5 p.m.\nCasket Arts Building\, Studio #213\, 681 17th Avenue NE\, Minneapolis\, MN 55413 (map) \n‘Prep for Winter with a Minnesota Water Steward’\nSaturday\, Nov. 11\, at 2 p.m.\nA panel discussion with Q&A about best practices to reduce salt usage.

Weave your and others’ blue fibers into community-created fabric that will become part of Karen Goulet and Monique Verdin’s traveling exhibition Aabijijiwan / Ukeyat yanalleh. Stations will be set up to explore indigo dyeing and weaving on the SAORI loom. \nSaturday\, Jan. 6\, 2024\, 12-3 p.m. No experience is needed. \nRegister\nAttire / COVID Safety / Intergenerational Info\nDress in clothes that may be stained. Masks and aprons are welcome. \nAll ages and abilities are welcome. We welcome intergenerational learning! If you are under the age of 16\, you need to be accompanied by an adult. Please let us know if you have any accommodation needs. \nAbout Weaving Water and MWMO\nMWMO Artist-in-Residence Sarah Nassif brings Weaving Water Workshops to residents across the urban watershed area. She collaborates with community organizations and fellow artists to spark new connections and conversations about our relationships to the Mississippi River and its vast watershed\, the fourth largest watershed in the world! \nWeaving Water Workshops reconnect us to the water flowing outside and the histories of cloth making flowing within us. We all descend from ancestors who created cloth for function and beauty with the help of local water sources. Textile skills of spinning\, weaving and dyeing with natural plant dyes have flowed from one generation to another for over 5\,000 years. How can these creative traditions inspire us to care for the River today? \nLearn more about Weaving Water.

SUMMARY:Net-Making Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Come explore net-making as both fiber art and performance practice. Learn the methods and materials used in commercial and recreational fishing along the Gulf Coast\, and explore ways to expand on the counting\, handwork\, postures\, rhythms\, and gestures of tying knots and weaving that go into this disappearing practice. \nUsing tools from her performance practice\, artist Victoria Bradford Styrbicki will lead participants through improvisation and iteration\, learning basic tasks like loading the net needle and tying the cinch knot to experimenting with mesh sizes and dip techniques. The workshop will be a laboratory\, or a site that together we should approach with a spirit of experimentation\, with a spirit of trial and error\, even of play\, and\, insistently\, of humor—that is\, the ability to laugh at ourselves and find joy in what we come upon even as we begin to take ourselves too seriously. \nParticipants will go away with the net they create during the workshop as well as a spool of twine and a net needle for future experimentation and practice. \nRegistration is required. Register here. \nLearn More: Network: A River Connected

SUMMARY:LTER Ramble on Salt
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever stopped to think about salt? Like\, really think about it? Sure\, it makes french fries delicious\, but did you know it’s also sneaking into our freshwater lakes and rivers\, changing ecosystems in ways that are kind of a big deal? \nThat’s why MSP_LTER (Minneapolis-St. Paul Long-Term Ecological Research Program) is hosting the Ramble on Salt—a casual\, nerdy\, hands-on gathering where scientists\, artists\, and local community members come together to talk about how salt is affecting urban watersheds in the Twin Cities. \nAt this event\, you’ll have the opportunity to: \n\nCreate letterpress postcards inspired by environmental themes\nEngage with interactive maps that highlight salt’s impact on local waterways\nSpeak with freshwater ecologists\, watershed managers\, and salt practitioners\n\nWhether you’re a scientist\, artist\, policymaker\, or simply curious about the health of our urban waters\, we welcome you to join the conversation. Together\, we can explore ways to balance winter safety with sustainable water management.
