About the Position

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for providing technical assistance in water resource protection and planning, with special emphasis on the establishment, operation, and maintenance of a watershed-wide baseline water quality monitoring program.

Essential Duties

  • Install, operate and maintain monitoring equipment in the field necessary to implement the monitoring program. This will include coordinating with landowners and obtaining necessary permits.
  • Coordinate with labs for equipment supply and sample drop-off or pick-up.
  • Ensure that monitoring data is regularly recorded in the database and is incorporated with other agency data in a timely and accurate manner for analysis of water quality.
  • Maintain accurate water quality data records.
  • Coordinate entering monitoring data into GIS system.
  • Monitor stormwater discharge at key outlets to the Mississippi River using stormwater best management practices, and main stem Mississippi River monitoring. Identify improper discharges through monitoring program. Accurately record, analyze, and store all data collected from monitoring program.
  • Develop field sheets and work logs for various monitoring activities.
  • Develop and implement quality control protocols for water monitoring program to ensure that water monitoring is conducted in an efficient and effective manner.

About the MWMO

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization works to protect and improve water quality, habitat, and natural resources in an urban watershed that drains directly into the Mississippi River.

The MWMO partners with our member communities to invest in green infrastructure that captures, cleans, and reuses stormwater. Our team monitors and tracks water quality in the watershed and conducts education and outreach to promote active environmental stewardship among residents.

The starting salary range for this position is $42,400–$47,701 annually, with a flexible schedule of 40 hours of work per week and a competitive benefits package.
